San Francisco Bay in Hi-Def

Hi-Def San Francisco are doing some amazing things with their San Francisco Bay webcam :

time lapse ships videos
real time shipping map that uses AIS data
panoramic panoramas dawn moon night

How do these work ? It's as if they've turned a photo into a Google map and are using the Google map player to display it ? Can anyone do this ?

I believe you can check out the documentation on "Custom Map Types" @ http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/overlays.html#Custom_Map_Types
